Located on the south-east coast of Africa, Mozambique is a country of great potential. It has significantly addressed some development indicators like infant mortality and immunization. To monitor and evaluate these developments and more, National Demographic and Socio-Economic Database (ESDEM) was launched in 2002. Since then it has convincingly grown as a source of information allowing access to a wide variety of data from household surveys and routine sectoral information. Realizing its potential, the fourth and updated version was launched in 2007 by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The ESDEM v4.0 is based on DevInfo v5.0 technology, having all the enhanced capabilities and features of the later. More than 100 provincial staff members from different ministries have been trained in the software to update and add new socio-economic indicators.

The scope of this database system is immense with developmental programs running across the country. This is a comprehensive national socio-economic database system, facilitating storage and analysis of indicators through the presentation of tables, graphs, reports and maps. It allows access to a wide variety of data from household surveys, routine sectoral information, health, water and sanitation, governance, science, technology, education, economy, HIV/AIDS, environment and population. The latest version allows the raster super imposition of DevInfo v5.0 maps over the ‘NASA World Wind’ globe, taking spatio-temporal analysis one step ahead. Indicators are also classified under Poverty Reduction Strategy (PARPA) making it easier to monitor the progress under the strategy.
