Since the mid-1990s, the Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-agency Group1 (MMEIG) has focused on establishing internationally comparable maternal mortality rates, assisting countries in improving measurement of maternal mortality and strengthening data use. Now, with the rapid approach of the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, closer tracking of maternal mortality levels is critical to achieve MDG5.

In order to bridge knowledge gaps and facilitate better understanding about how maternal mortality estimates are generated, the MMEIG has launched a new online tool: MME Info, short for Maternal Mortality Estimates Info. Powered by DevInfo technology, MME Info is a comprehensive data visualization portal containing the latest maternal mortality estimates released by the MMEIG as well as related indicators. The site is designed to track global progress on maternal mortality at the country and regional levels, allowing for easy analysis and visualization of the latest and most relevant data.

Over the years, the MMEIG has continued to

develop and update statistical methods of generating maternal mortality estimates for countries, including those for which no reliable data exist. The new tool aims to present in a clear and transparent way the underlying data, process and methods used to calculate the maternal mortality ratio estimates.

National programme officers, development partners and researchers can use the new MME Info site to:

  • view the latest available data by country,
  • compare country data against regional data, and
  • access related publications.

With MME Info in place, national and international public health officials and policy makers now have an excellent tool at their fingertips to support planning, advocacy and research towards improving safe motherhood.

Data making a difference.
