Yemen: Using DevInfo to Support Development Challenges
(19 April 2011)
Download PDF Print News Print News

Located on the southern edge of the Arabian peninsula, the country of Yemen faces a variety of economic, environmental and political challenges in its path towards development. With a 3% population growth rate – one of the highest globally – the nation’s population is expected to double in 23 years to 40 million, putting additional pressure on the country’s education and health systems. Water shortages, already problematic, can be expected to grow even more acute in the years ahead. Development experts point to the jobless slow growth cycle afflicting the Yemeni economy, leading to persistent unemployment – particularly among the youth and women.1

In light of these challenges, the success of Yemen’s Development Plan for Poverty Reduction (DPPR) – the country’s road map for human development progress - becomes even more critical. Based on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the DPPR is developed using inputs from DevInfo Yemen, a database system launched by the country’s Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC) to help monitor and track the nation’s development progress.

“The 2008 National Plan (Third Socio-Economic DPPR) report was prepared using inputs generated from DevInfo Yemen,” explains Ali Kawara, DevInfo Yemen Administrator, MOPIC. “As a result, the Cabinet of the Republic of Yemen issued a decision to implement DevInfo database technology in all government sectors and sub-sectors, to strengthen their capacity to monitor National plans.”

“We also rely upon DevInfo Yemen to provide data for the annual MDG reports,” adds Kawara.

MOPIC has launched a searchable online gallery providing ready access to many types of presentation objects generated from DevInfo Yemen: tables, graphs and maps.

“This online gallery assists stakeholders in monitoring indicators related to the National and Sub-national DPPRs and the MDGs, as well as helps disseminate census data,” states Kawara.

Furthermore, to support gender equality efforts in the country, MOPIC recently organized a training workshop on how to use DevInfo Yemen to provide access to gender data and highlight data gaps and areas for programme strengthening, at the national and sub-national levels.

With DevInfo Yemen firmly in place, the country has an excellent tool to help track its stated commitments to human development for all.
