88    Of the 101 million children of primary school age not in school in 2007, 88 per cent lived in Asia or Africa.

Millennium Development Goal 2 : Achieve universal primary education

Target: Ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

In 2007, 101 million children of primary school age were not in school. Of this total, 88 per cent lived in Asia or Africa.

Across the two regions, approximately 20 per cent of girls and 16 per cent of boys of primary school age are either not enrolled or are not attending primary school.

Aggregating the data on children from these two vast continents provides a stark reminder of the overwhelming importance of making rapid progress across both Africa and Asia if global development goals are to be realized.
