There are some areas of child survival and development where advances have been
limited or are overshadowed by the extent of continued
deprivation. One such area is low birthweight –
around 14 per cent of children (including 19 million
infants in developing countries) are born weighing
less than 2,500 grams – a condition that often
derives from the mother’s poor health and nutritional
status.
