In child survival, progress has been significant, with the number of deaths among
children under 5 years old reduced from 12.5 million
in 1990 to less than 9 million (8.8) in 2008. However,
an average of 25,000 children under five are still
dying each day, mostly from causes preventable
with low-cost, proven interventions.
Pneumonia and diarrhoeal diseases are the biggest killers of children under five,
accounting for almost 40 per cent of deaths for
this age cohort.
