Unsafe water, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene contribute to child mortality
and morbidity. However, between 1990 and 2006,
more than 1.6 billion people gained access to improved
drinking water sources.
The primary health care approach emphasizes the interconnectedness of improved
water and sanitation and hygiene with essential
health care, adequate nutrition, sound infrastructure
and community partnerships in health.
