3.3 million    The number of newborns worldwide dying in the first month of life is 3.3 million.

Millennium Development Goal 4 : Reduce child mortality

Target : Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate

Child survival is a benchmark indicator for child development. Inadequate health care and nutrition for women contribute to high numbers of neonatal deaths, with 3.3 million newborns dying within the first month after birth each year.

Even so, significant progress has been made in reducing the global under-five mortality rate from 90 deaths per 1,000 live births to 65 deaths per 1,000 live births over the period of 1990-2008.

Establishing a continuum of maternal, newborn and child primary health care is key to addressing this challenge.
