Young women continue to be disproportionately vulnerable to HIV infection in countries across Eastern and Southern Africa, with adolescent girls around 2 to 4.5 times more likely to be living with HIV than their male counterparts.
The risks for HIV infection among girls and women are likely to increase where poverty is greatest. Recent studies in five countries in Southern Africa have shown the links between acute food insecurity and unprotected transactional sex among poor women.
