50    The proportion of infants who are exclusively breastfed in most countries is less than 50 per cent.

A World Fit For Children Goal: To protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continued breastfeeding with safe, appropriate and adequate feeding up to 2 years of age and beyond

In most countries, less than half of infants under 6 months of age receive the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. Rates are particularly low in countries in West and Central Africa, CEE/CIS, and the Middle East and North Africa.

There is growing evidence of the significant impact of early initiation of breastfeeding, preferably within the first hour after birth, on reducing overall neonatal mortality. Continued breastfeeding beyond six months, accompanied by sufficient quantities of nutritionally adequate, safe and appropriate solid, semi-solid and soft foods, also helps ensure good nutritional status and protects against illnesses.
