Although
there are even fewer statistics on gender
asset gaps than on wage disparities, the
evidence available suggests that the pattern
of discrimination is broadly similar across
the developing world. A study covering five
Latin American countries indicates that
women own only a fraction of the land compared
with men. In other regions where data are
available, women face similar inequalities.
For example, in Cameroon, while women undertake
more than 75 per cent of agricultural work
they own less than 10 per cent of the land.
Comparable disparities have been identified
in Kenya, Nigeria, the United Republic of
Tanzania and other countries in sub-Saharan
Africa. 18 in Pakistan, research reveals
that women owned less than 3 per cent of
plots in sampled villages, despite having
the right to inherit land in most villages.
