Development Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Target: Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS
More than 90 per cent of HIV infections in infants and children are passed on by the mother during pregnancy, labour, delivery or breastfeeding. Only 11 per cent of women who are infected with HIV in low- and middle-income countries are estimated to have access to antiretroviral prophylaxis to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their infants.
