86 million The number of jobless youth worldwide in 2006
Millennium
Development Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
Target: In cooperation with developing countries, develop and implement strategies for decent and productive work for youth
Both developed and developing economies are failing to provide job opportunities at a fast enough pace to fully employ their young people. Since 1996, the number of jobless youth has grown from 74 million to 86 million in 2006.This represents almost half of the 195 million jobless people in the world. Young people tend to have more difficulty finding work than adults and, in many countries, they are more than three times as likely to be without jobs. In 2006, youth unemployment stood at 13.6 per cent, compared to the adult unemployment rate of 4.4 per cent.
