By the end of 2006, an estimated 39.5 million
people worldwide were living with HIV (up
from 2.9 million in 2001), mostly in sub-Saharan
Africa. Globally, 4.3 million people were
newly infected with the virus in 2006, with
Eastern Asia and the CIS showing the fastest
rates of infection. The number of people
dying from AIDS has also increased –
from 2.2 million in 2001 to 2.9 million
in 2006.
