920 The annual maternal mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa as compared to 8 in Industrialized countries
Millennium
Development Goal 5 : Improve maternal health
Target : Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio
More than half a million women die each year due to pregnancy-related causes, and many more suffer debilitating long term effects, such as fistula, that could be easily avoided through adequate maternal care. Furthermore, improving maternal health is vitally important for a child’s prospects of survival. Evidence shows that a motherless child is more likely to die before reaching age two than infants whose mothers survive.
