Preventing HIV infection in women of childbearing age and treating infected pregnant women with available drug combinations can greatly reduce the transmission of the virus to children. In low and middle-income countries, 33% of HIV-positive pregnant women received antiretrovirals for prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in 2007.
