38    Globally, 38 per cent of infants less than six months old are exclusively breastfed.

World Fit For Children Goal: To protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continued breastfeeding with safe, appropriate and adequate feeding up to 2 years of age and beyond

Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life helps protect newborns and infants from disease, reduces the risk of mortality and encourages healthy child development. Globally, 38% of infants less than six months old are exclusively breastfed.

Raising awareness of improved individual household practices and behaviours, such as exclusively breastfeeding newborns and infants up to six months, has considerable potential to improve the health and well-being of families.
