Indicator 7.4: Proportion of fish stocks within safe biological limits
The proportion of fish stocks estimated to be underexploited
or moderately exploited declined from 40 per cent in the mid-1970s to 15 per cent in 2008. Over roughly the same period, the proportion of overexploited, depleted or recovering fish stocks increased from 10 per cent to 33 per cent. The proportion of fully
exploited stocks has remained relatively stable at about 50 per cent since the 1970s, with some slightly lower levels between 1985 and 1997.
The global production of marine capture fisheries reached a peak of 86.3 million tonnes in 1996.
