50   Between 2000 and 2009, there was a greater than 50 per cent reduction in malaria cases in the 21 malaria–endemic countries in the Americas.

Millennium Development Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Target 6C: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases

Indicator 6.6: Incidence and death rates associated with malaria

During the past decade, there was remarkable progress in malaria control in the Americas. Between 2000 and 2009, there was a greater than 50 per cent reduction in malaria cases and an estimated 46 per cent reduction in deaths (less than 150 deaths identified by the reporting countries) in the 21 malaria-endemic countries in the Americas (Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela).

The progress was largely accomplished though the use of standard approaches to prevention, as well as prompt diagnosis and treatment of cases (and case investigation and transmission containment in some countries). Much of the financing came from national governments, with some external support through the Global Fund and bilateral donors.
