| Open Source Version of DevInfo Launched, Ushering in New Era of Global Cooperation in Human Development Software |

The DevInfo initiative has just launched OpenDevInfo, an open source version of the powerful DevInfo database system endorsed by the United Nations Development Group to assist countries in monitoring achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
OpenDevInfo was developed in response to a growing number of user requests over the years for an open source version of DevInfo. Some users expressed a desire to further customize the database software to accommodate specific needs, such as generating custom reports or localizing the database contents. Others wished to directly import DevInfo data into their site using a DevInfo data access component. Still others wanted a method to integrate certain DevInfo components, such as the mapping component, into their own applications.
In response to this global user demand, the DevInfo initiative has developed and released an open source version of DevInfo – OpenDevInfo - whose source code is publicly available, thereby enabling anyone to freely copy, modify and/or redistribute it. OpenDevInfo is a working baseline application containing the core data search and presentation features of DevInfo 6.0, developed using platform-neutral open source technologies such as Flex, PHP, MySQL, Apache and Linux.
All users and software developers are encouraged to contribute to the development of OpenDevInfo,

with the goals of improving the ability of the database software to better monitor, track and disseminate data on human development. In terms of how source code changes made by the global community will be managed, the DevInfo initative will seek to encourage a development methodology conducive to carrying out software development in a transparent, collaborative manner. This process will allow OpenDevInfo to
harness the power of distributed peer development and peer review.
