Uzbekistan Launches UzbekInfo to Monitor Country’s MDG Progress
Download PDF Print News

The Government of Uzbekistan, in partnership with the UN Country Team, jointly launched UzbekInfo in June 2010 as a tool to monitor the country’s progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and other national priorities. UzbekInfo is an adaptation of the DevInfo database system endorsed by the United Nations for tracking and disseminating MDG and other human development data.

The impetus behind the development of UzbekInfo lay in the Government’s commitment

to incorporate the MDGs into national development strategies, as well as to set up an effective monitoring and evaluation system. As a result, in May 2009 the Government’s State Committee on

Statistics and the Ministry of Economy, in partnership with UNDP and UNICEF, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop a database system to monitor the country’s progress towards achieving the MDGs. DevInfo was selected as the database platform to be used, given its endorsement by the UN in making MDG-related data more accessible to a variety of stakeholders and its reputation as a statistical tool with user-friendly features.

The CD version of UzbekInfo was launched containing data on more than 110 national MDG-related indicators classified according to 8

national goals and 11 targets. Available in Uzbek, Russian and English, the database includes time periods ranging from 2000 to 2009 and contains data disaggregated by gender, location and age. Coinciding with the launch of UzbekInfo was a four-day training from 14-17 June 2010 on the use of the database to search for human development data in Uzbekistan. An online version of UzbekInfo is being planned for release in late June 2010.

From the Government’s perspective, the first priority of UzbekInfo is to monitor progress towards achievement of nationalized MDGs.
Plans have been made to update the database annually with data from official and administrative sources. Already UzbekInfo has been used to prepare the country’s National MDG Report for 2010 and the National Human Development Report of Uzbekistan on Regional Disparities. In the future, the Government expects to develop additional databases to provide relevant information to policy makers, donors and other data consumers.
